Ok, it's been a few years since we've posted anything, but I wanted to keep track of some of the things we do as a family during the summer so figured this was as good a place as any to do that. Who knows maybe it will inspire some of you to go on more adventures with your family.
We really appreciate how difficult it can be to go places with kids (believe me), but we feel travelling and experiencing new things is the way that kids learn about the world. So we have decided to push through the hard times and look towards the sunny side even when the rain seems endless (making more beautiful flowers ⚘).
Pittsburgh June 9-10, 2018
We now have a 5th grader, 3rd grader and 1st grader and decided to celebrate by going on an overnight in Pittsburgh. Our favorite place to stay is the Embassy Suites downtown Pittsburgh where complimentary happy hour is from 5:30-7:30 and breakfast is quite the spread.
Saturday started with a trip to the Carnegie Science Center where we did the ropes course, explored some of the exhibits and watched a few shows about chemistry and making ice cream (with samples of course). Before we left Lincoln used is own money to buy a penguin (Bluebell) that turns into a neck pillow and has since begun work on a house for him complete with a pool.
After checking into the hotel we settled in for a little happy hour in the lobby while the kids played Prodigy , a math game Lincoln's teacher showed him this year. Colin and Divo love to watch Lincoln play (must be a boy thing). After having a little pre-dinner snack we headed out the check out the Three Rivers Arts Festival and listen to some live music. We made our way to the point and found some fresh kettle korn and other yummy treats to eat while listening to a little country music. Then we got to see some white dudes rapping on our way back to the hotel for some much needed rest.
Sunday started with a delicious breakfast and then a dip in the Embassy pool with loads of splashing and Colin swimming all by himself! Next it was time to shower off and head to a coffee shop for a much needed mocha at Biddles, delicious. After getting a little caffeine jolt we headed to The Frick and explored some of the awesome paintings collected by the Mellon family over the years that were donated to the Virginia Museum of fine art and were on display in Pittsburgh (Picasso, Van Gaugh, Monet, Renoir, just to name a few). The works were wonderful and it was amazing to recognize the artists by their styles and see so many in such a small space. After seeing the Cars in the Carriage house we took a break for lunch at Mineo's Pizza (it was just ok). Then we went on our tour of the Clayton house, which was the home of Henry Clay Frick and his family from 1882-1905. The kids were wonderfully polite and well mannered during the tour so we treated them to some ice cream afterwards at NatuRoll Creamery. Very cool ice cream, kinda like Cold Stone, except they roll the ice cream up, super yummy, but $7 price tag is a bit too steep.
It was now time to leave Pittsburgh and we of course had to stop by IKEA to pick up a few items to help finish furnishing our new house. What a great way to end our fabulous Pittsburgh weekend! Pictures to follow once we get them off Derek's phone...
